Box Score 2 POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team endured a quiet day at Cal Poly Pomona's Scolinos Field, dropping both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader.
The Golden Eagles were blanked over the first 15 innings of the doubleheader and lost two games to the Broncos, 6-0 and 4-3. The Golden Eagles rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in the nightcap, but the potential tying run was left at third base.
Cal State L.A. (10-11, 8-7 CCAA) won the opener of the four-game series, but lost the last three games to Cal Poly Pomona (17-4, 11-4 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles managed only t hree hits in the opener.
Manny Acosta picked up two hits and
Niko Garcia had the other.
David Armas struggled early on the mound, but then settled in and turned in seven innings of work. He allowed seven hits in his first 21 pitches and Cal Poly Pomona took a 4-0 lead after two innings. Armas kept the Golden Eagles in the game over his final five innings of work, but the Golden Eagles failed to score against the Broncos' Max Bethall. The Cal Poly Pomona starter tossed a three-hit shutout and faced only four batters over the minimum.
He wasn't overpowering, striking out only three, but he kept the Golden Eagles off balance all afternoon.
Armas allowed 14 hits and five runs, while
Chris Oropesa allowed an eighth-inning run in his one inning of work.
David Armendariz was 3-for-5 with three RBI, whiile Matt Munoz and Steven Andrade scored two runs each for the Broncos.
In the nightcap, the Broncos scored all four of their runs in the first three innings and held on for the win. Cody Ponce pitched a complete game for Cal Poly Pomona to get the win.
Marcos Casillas started and went the first two innings for the Golden Eagles. He gave up four hits and two runs.
Ryan Keller pitched the final four innings for the Golden Eagles and also allowed four hits and two runs. After allowing two runs in his first inning of work, Keller tossed three consecutive shutout innings.
Cal State L.A. finally scored its first run of the day in the seventh and made a strong bid to tie the game.
Jesus Cuevas led off the inning with a walk and Garcia reached on an infield hit.
Trent Zaks then drove in Cuevas with a single to right.
Steven Luna reached on a fielder's choice and Garcia was thrown out at home for the first out.
Andrew Montanari reached on a throwing error that enabled Zaks to score and pinch runner
Josh Guerra to advance to third. A groundout by Ryan made it 4-3 and moved Montarnari to third, but Acosta struck out to end the game.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with the opener of a four-game series against Chico State.
