Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team saw a ninth-inning rally fall short in frustrating fashion Friday night at Reeder Field.
The Golden Eagles got a pair of home runs from
Kyle Peralta and 11 strikeouts from
Brandon Quintero, but fell to Cal Poly Pomona, 6-5, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. Cal State L.A. (10-9, 8-5 CCAA) had a five-game winning streak snapped and fell a game back of Cal Poly Pomona (15-4, 9-4 CCAA).
Cal State L.A. fell behind 3-0 in the third inning and never could pull even. Cal State L.A. pulled to within a run at 4-3, 5-4 and 6-5, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get.
The Broncos' final run in the ninth inning was unearned after a failed pickoff attempt, a wild pitch and a passed ball and the final out of the game for Cal State L.A. came when a runner at third was caught in a rundown after straying too far away from the base.
Kyle Peralta hit a pair of solo home runs and prior to each homer the Golden Eagles had a baserunner thrown out on the basepaths.
Manny Acosta was 3-for-4,
Trent Zaks was 2-for-4 with a run scored and
Steven Luna was 2-for-4 with a double and a run driven in.
Brandon Quintero went 8 2/3 innings in another strong start. He yielded a bases-loaded double in the third inning, but only one earned run the rest of the way. He went 8 2/3 innings and allowed 12 hits and four earned runs while walking two and striking out 11.
Matt Munoz was 4-for-5 with two runs scored for the Broncos, while David Armendariz had the bases-loaded double that staked the Broncos to a 3-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles began their comeback with Peralta's first home run in the bottom of the fourth. Cal Poly Pomona made it 4-1 with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Golden Eagles countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Acosta doubled and
Cody Doyle singled him in, but was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double ahead of Peralta's second home run of the game.
Cal Poly Pomona got an unearned run in the seventh, but Acosta's RBI single made it 5-4.
The Broncos then scored another unearned run in the top of the ninth, taking a 6-4 lead on a two-out single by Joseph Eusebio.
That set the stage for the bottom of the ninth. Zaks singled to lead off the inning and scored on a double by Luna. Two straight groundouts only moved the runner to third and a costly pickoff ended the game.
Cal State L.A. will conclude its four-game series with Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday with a doubleheader in Pomona beginning at 11 a.m.
