SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team found itself in another battle with a nationally-ranked opponent and the Golden Eagles fell just short against Academy of Art Thursday at the San Francisco Tennis Club.
The Golden Eagles took one of the three doubles contests and two of the six singles matches in a 6-3 loss to No. 14 Academy of Art. Cal State L.A. (4-7), ranked 20th in the nation, lost its seventh straight match and came up just short again against a team ranked higher in the national rankings.
Academy of Art (11-1) is also ranked third in the West Region.
Leora Hemmerich and
Sydney Postal got the Golden Eagles their only point in doubles with an 8-6 win over Nina Gajdosikova and Daniela Amelunge at No. 1 doubles.
Sonia Landeros and
Tiffany Leung fell in the No. 2 doubles match, 8-3 and
Samantha Sismundo and
Sevana Zargarian lost at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.
Cal State L.A.'s wins in singles came at No. 4 singles, where Postal had a 6-4, 3-3 lead before her opponent, Annika Schneider, retired and at No. 5 singles where Leung beat Daniela Amelunge, 6-3, 6-1. Hemmerich lost a tough battle at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 to Gajdosikova.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Sonoma State, weather permitting.
