LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team had another tough battle with one of the nation's top-10 programs.
The Golden Eagles picked up a point at No. 1 doubles, but that was it and No. 4 Hawaii Pacific posted an 8-1 win over No. 22 Cal State L.A. on Friday at UC San Diego's Northview Courts. Cal State L.A. (4-5) lost its fifth straight match, but all five losses are to nationally-ranked teams and the last four are to teams in the top-10.
Cal State L.A. got its only point from
Leora Hemmerich and
Sydney Postal, who recorded an impressive 8-4 win over Hawaii Pacific's Lea Kruse-Utermann and Vivian Hansen. The Golden Eagles lost the other two doubles contests by scores of 8-1.
Hawaii Pacific (9-1) won all six singles matches, five of them in straight sets. Cal State L.A.'s Sonia Landereos had a hard-fought match at No. 2 singles before she lost to Hawaii Pacific's Magdalena Smejova, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Hemmerich lost in a competitive match at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-3, to Karen Ramirez. Postal lost her first dual match of the season in a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Lorena Gheorghe at No. 3 singles. Hansen defeated
Tiffany Leung at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4, Kruse-Utermann beat
Victoria Vo at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-0 and Carrie Schuler beat
Samantha Sismundo at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday, March 22 with a home match against Division I Colorado State at 11 a.m.
