LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team got off to another fast start Friday and posted its second straight victory.
The Golden Eagles swept the three doubles contests for the second match in a row and went on to beat Point Loma, 6-3, Friday at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (2-0) got a big come-from-behind victory at No. 3 doubles from
Samantha Sismundo and
Sevana Zargarian and picked up important second-set rallies from
Leora Hemmerich at No. 1 singles and
Tiffany Leung at No. 3 singles to secure the win over Point Loma (0-2).
The doubles teams of Hemmerich and
Sydney Postal,
Sonia Landeros and Leung and Sismundo and Zargarian got the Golden Eagles off to their good start. Sismundo and Zargarian had the most compelling match, overcoming a 7-4 deficit and beating Point Loma's Sharon Reibstein and Preethika Venugopal, 9-8 (7-2 in the tiebreaker) at No. 3 doubles. Hemmerich and Postal beat Hope Penner and Regina von Koch, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and Landeros and Leung beat Maika Adair and Hillary Ramage, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles.
Postal picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles to give the Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead, but Point Loma made things interesting with wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. In addition, Hemmerich faced a 4-1 deficit at No. 1 singles against Adair and Leung was down, 4-3, at No. 3 singles to Penner. Leung, though, captured last three games to complete a 6-3, 6-4 win and Hemmerich rolled off five straight games to finish a 6-4, 6-4 win and Cal State L.A. secured its second straight victory.
