LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2014 season, but the Golden Eagles didn't fall without putting up an outstanding battle.
The Golden Eagles and UC San Diego competed for more than four-and-a-half hours before UC San Diego outlasted Cal State L.A., 6-3, at the UC San Diego Tennis Courts. The match included a trio of three-set matches in singles, two of which went to the Tritons. The fact the match was so close was not a surprise since it featured a pair of nationally-ranked teams, No. 17 UC San Diego (6-4) and No. 20 Cal State L.A. (4-1).
The Golden Eagles dropped two of the three doubles contests, but salvaged a point at No. 2 doubles, where
Sonia Landeros and
Tiffany Leung pulled out a hard-fought 8-6 decision.
Cal State L.A. won two of the six singles contests.
Sydney Postal recorded a 7-6, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles over Tara Vanooteghem and Leung won a three-set battle at No. 5 singles over UC San Diego's Shannon Theisen.
The contest at No. 1 singles was a tight one as Cal State L.A.'s
Leora Hemmerich fell to the Tritons' Kyra Scott, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and
Tiffani Shaik dropped a three-set match at No. 3 singles, 5-7, 6-0, 7-6.
Victoria Vo lost a tight match at No. 6 singles to Kellie Taylor, 7-5, 7-6 and Landeros fell at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3, to Paula Chou.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home match against Azusa Pacific at 2 p.m.
