LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team needed a rally for the first time this season and the Golden Eagles got a nice one Saturday.
The Golden Eagles got a gutty win at No. 3 doubles from
Samantha Sismundo and
Sevana Zargarian and a deciding three-set win at No. 5 singles from
Victoria Vo to post a 5-4 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (3-0) won four of the six singles contest to overtake CMS in the match.
Leora Hemmerich also won a three-set contest at No. 1 singles, edging Caroline Ward, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.
The match was tied at 4-4 when the match at No. 5 singles between Vo and Yvonne Likomanova went to a third set. Vo outlasted Likomanova, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, to give the Golden Eagles the dramatic win.
The Golden Eagles also won singles matches at No. 2 singles, where
Sonia Landeros beat Katie Kuosman, 7-5, 6-4 and at No. 3 singles, where
Sydney Postal beat Sarah Kukino, 6-1, 6-1.
CMS took both the No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles and very nearly swept the three doubles contests. Sismundo and Zargarian prevailed, 8-6, and the match ended at just the right time for the Golden Eagles because Zargarian was injured on the final point, which was hit long by CMS to end the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19 with a home match against Concordia.
