Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got a late-inning rally in the first game and a grand early-inning rally in the second of a successful day Saturday at Reeder Field.
The Golden Eagles scored an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth to win the opener, 4-3, and then got a grand slam home run from
Kyle Peralta as part of a seven-inning rally in the second inning of the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader from Sonoma State, 10-4.
Cal State L.A. (4-5, 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association) was blanked in the series opener on Friday, but rebounded nicely on Saturday against Sonoma State (2-3, 1-2 CCAA).
Pinch runner
Kevin Fontana scored from second base on an infield error in the ninth inning of the opener to give Cal State L.A. the win in the opener.
David Armas went seven strong innings and allowed seven hits and three runs, while
Reed Reznicek pitched two scoreless innings while striking out three to pick up the win.
Manny Acosta had two hits and scored a run, while
David Trejo was 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI.
Drew Vanisi also had a run-scoring hit.
Cal State L.A. took a 3-0 lead after four innings, but Sonoma State rallied behind the bat of Eric Ehlow, who slugged a solo home run in the fifth and a two-run shot in the seventh to tie it.
Reznicek blanked the Seawolves on just one hit over the final two innings to get the win. The winning rally was set up by Trejo drew a one-out walk and Fontana came on as a pinch runner and moved to second on an infield single by Vanisi. Ryan then hit a bouncer to second that Sonoma State's second baseball misplayed as Vanisi was running by. Ryan raced home for the win.
The Golden Eagles took early control in the nightcap. After the Seawolves scored a pair of unearned runs in the first, Cal State L.A. exploded for seven runs in the second, including a grand slam by Peralta. The blast was the Golden Eagles' first home run of the season.
Niko Garcia had a sacrifice fly for the first run and a two-run single by Acosta gave the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead. After
Cody Doyle walked to load the bases, Peralta drilled a pitch over the right-field fence to make it 7-2.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the fourth inning and a single run in the fifth.
The run support was more than enough for
Ryan Keller, who allowed seven hits and only two earned runs in five innings. He walked two and struck out two.
Jordan Cavazos finished up with two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and struck out one.
Cal State L.A. will conclude the series with Sonoma State with a home game on Sunday at 11 a.m
