SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team put the finishing touches on an oustanding week of defense.
Â
The Golden Eagles posted their second straight shutout this week and third in a row overall and beat Cal State San Bernardino, 2-0, Sunday at a sizzling Coyote Premier Field. Cal State L.A. (7-2, 3-1 CCAA) got a first-half goal from
Halil Tozar and a second-half goal by
Eduardo Almaraz and that was more than enough with the Golden Eagles' stout defensive effort.
Cal State L.A. had a 9-4 edge in shots and allowed only one shot in the second half.
Mike Beigarten had another strong game and recorded four saves for the team's fifth shutout of the season. In four conference games so far, the only goal allowed by Cal State L.A. came on a penalty kick.
Tozar put the Golden Eagles ahead in the 23rd minute with his team-leading fifth goal of the season. He was set up by
Jordan Payne, who notched his third assist. Payne got a pass to Tozar, who knocked in a shot from about 10 yards out.
The Golden Eagles made it 2-0 in the 67th minute. After a Cal State San Bernardino (4-4, 0-4 CCAA) foul and yellow card, Almaraz knocked in a free kick from outside the box for his first goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home game on Friday against Cal State Monterey Bay at 4:30 p.m.
