SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team struck quickly on Sunday in its California Collegiate Athletic Association battle with No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay.
The No. 7 Golden Eagles got a goal from Sigifredo Torres just 2:33 into the game, but that was it and Cal State L.A. was held to a 1-1 tie by the Otters. Cal State L.A. (4-1-1, 2-1-1 CCAA) slipped out of first place in the tightly-packed CCAA South Division.
Cal State L.A. was able to pressure Cal State Monterey Bay throughout and finished with an 18-15 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. The Golden Eagles' biggest advantage was in corner kicks with a big 8-3 edge, but Cal State L.A. was unable to convert any into goals.
Mike Beigarten made five saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Even Drake made eight saves for the Otters (4-1-1, 2-1-1 CCAA), who are nationally ranked for the first time in the program's history.
The Golden Eagles, who were ranked in the top-10 last week for the seventh consecutive season, got on the board first when Torres, in his first start of the season, scored his first goal of the year. He took a pass from Juan Ochoa and knocked it past Drake for the score. The assist was Ochoa's team-leading third of the season. Ochoa earned first-team All-CCAA and All-West Region honors last season as a junior.
Cal State L.A. held its lead until the 31st minute when Manuel Cazares manuevered through the defense and scored inside the far post for his second goal of the season. Juan Montellano had the assist.
The Golden Eagles controlled the second half and had an 11-4 advantage in shots in the period, but were unable to get one past Drake.
Cal State L.A. had two more chances in the overtime periods, but came up empty.
Andre Bissmark, Torres, Sammy Gonzalez and Jordan Payne had three shots each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against Chico State at 4:30 p.m.
