No. 11 Golden Eagles Begin CCAA Play With 1-0 Win

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team got its California Collegiate Athletic Association start off on the right foot, thanks to the left foot of senior midfielder Juan Ochoa.

Ochoa launched a left-footed shot from about 30 yards out that found the back of the net in the 29th minute and lifted the No. 11 Golden Eagles to a 1-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona Friday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (3-0, 1-0 CCAA) had another outstanding defensive effort and the Golden Eagles needed it to hold off a determined Cal Poly Pomona squad.

The Broncos (2-1, 0-1 CCAA) had allowed only one goal heading into Friday's match and they made things difficult for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. pounced on several turnovers in Cal Poly Pomona territory, but the Broncos were adept at keeping the Golden Eagles off the board - except for Ochoa.

Cal State L.A. had an 11-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 advantage in the opening half. The Golden Eagles also had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Mike Beigarten made four saves to post the shutout in his first start for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles controlled play for most of the first half, but Cal Poly Pomona had a dangerous chance in the ninth minute when Leonel Espinoza's header in the box went just wide of the far post.

The Golden Eagles finally took the lead in the 29th minute thanks to the booming shot by Ochoa. Cal State L.A. earned a throw-in and Daniel Rodriguez tossed it in to Ochoa, who had his back initially to the goal. Ochoa spun around and drilled a shot that found the upper part of the net for his first goal of the season. Ochoa, a first-team All-CCAA and All-West Region midfielder last season, now had four points on the season for the Golden Eagles.

The Broncos had a pair of good chances in the second half, most notably a bid by Brandon Cortez that Beigarten was able to make a superb save to keep out of the net. He also snared a header from Cortez in the 71st minute. Beigarten made all four of his saves in the second half.

Halil Tozar had a strong match and had a team-high three shots, while Ochoa, Jordan Payne and Abel Teferi had two shots each.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against No. 25 UC San Diego at 11:30 a.m.
