Golden Eagles Stay Hot, Beat Sonoma To Reach Title Game

Box Score STOCKTON -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team stayed hot on a warm day in Stockton and beat Sonoma State to reach a showdown on Sunday for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament title.

The Golden Eagles, shortly after a 14-3 elimination game victory over Cal State Monterey Bay, collected 17 more hits and beat Sonoma State, 15-3, Saturday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. Cal State L.A. (34-20) scored 29 runs on 38 hits in the two games on Saturday and will now face Sonoma State for the tournament championship on Sunday at noon.

The winner receives the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship Tournament.

Cal State L.A. has won more than one game in the CCAA Championship Tournament for the first time in the program's history. Cal State L.A. was 1-6 in three previous tournament appearances.

The Golden Eagles doubled that win total in a single day on Saturday. Even though the opponents were different, Cal State L.A. did continue an odd streak in conference doubleheaders. The Golden Eagles have either swept or been swept in each conference doubleheaders this season.

After the win over Cal State Monterey Bay (recap was posted earlier on Saturday), the Golden Eagles scored six runs in the first two innings against Sonoma State and added six more runs in the fourth inning to take early command. The offense backed another gutty starting pitching performance, this one from Omar Jimenez, who allowed only two earned runs in nine innings. He didn't walk a batter, struck out four and blanked the Seawolves (34-19) over the final six innings.

In his last two starts, Jimenez has recorded wins over Chico State and Sonoma State and pitched a total of 16 innings in the two victories.

Cody Doyle had two hits and five RBI in the win over Sonoma State, while Jeremy Weber was 3-for-4 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI. He hit his sixth home run of the season. Scott Masik was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Casey Ryan was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Manny Acosta was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Tyler Christian was 2-for-4 with one run scored. James Wharton, the CCAA Player of the Year, had two RBI.

The Golden Eagles took advantage of a pair of Sonona State errors in the first inning and took a quick 2-0 lead. Wharton's sacrifice fly drove in Masik with the game's first run and Doyle drove in the second run with a grounder. Sonoma State collected four hits in the bottom of the first and scored a run on Garrett Schwartz' infield single, but Jimenez recorded a strikeout and double-play grounder to escape further damage.

Cal State L.A. added four more runs in the second. Masik singled in a run and Wharton's groundout made it 4-1. Doyle then picked up a clutch, two-out, two-run single to stretch the lead to 6-1.

Sonoma State sliced the lead to 6-3 with two more runs in the bottom of the third, but Jimenez didn't allow another run in six brilliant innings to complete the win. Cal State L.A.'s offense, meanwhile, broke the game wide open with six runs in the fourth. Doyle had a two-run single and later scored on an error. Ryan also had a two-run single in the inning and Masik had a sacrifice fly.

Cal State L.A. made it 13-3 in the fifth when Niko Garcia singled home Doyle and the Golden Eagles completed the scoring in the sixth when Weber hit a two-run home run to left.

The Golden Eagles have outscored their opponents, 42-11, in their first four games of the tournament with one win each over the other three teams in the tourney, beating Chico State (9-0), Cal State Monterey Bay (14-3) and Sonoma State (15-3) and fallling to Sonoma State (5-4) as they improve their NCAA resume.

The winner of tomorrow's game will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The full field will be announced on www.ncaa.com at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
