Golden Eagles Come Up Short Against Seawolves In Tourney

Box Score STOCKTON -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had its chances in its California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament game against Sonoma State on Friday, but the Golden Eagles couldn't quite get the job done.

The Golden Eagles hit a pair of early home runs against the CCAA Pitcher of the Year, but still came up short to the Seawolves, 5-4, in Banner Island Ballpark. Cal State L.A. (32-20) will now face Cal State Monterey Bay in an elimination game on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Jeremy Weber and Ryan Cooperstone hit home runs against Sonoma State starter Glenn Wallace, who came into the game with an earned run average under 1.00. Cal State L.A. had six hits in the contest, four of them for extra bases.

The Golden Eagles also got a strong pitching performance from freshman Brandon Quintero, who allowed only six hits and two earned runs in seven innings. He walked three and struck out eight.

Four Cal State L.A. errors, though, were costly and Sonoma State scored a pair of runs in the third and three in the fifth to take the lead. Neither team scored after the fifth inning in the tightly-contested tournament game.

Weber put the Golden Eagles on the board with a solo home run in the first inning, driving a shot over the left-field fence. James Wharton, the CCAA Player of the Year, followed with a double, but the Golden Eagles were unable to bring him in and settled for the quick 1-0 lead.

Sonoma State took the lead with two runs in the third, one scoring on a run-scoring double by Steven Filippi and the other on a throwing error.

Cooperstone, though, put the Golden Eagles ahead in the fourth inning with a three-run blast, his first home run of the season. Cody Doyle reached on an error to start the inning and Tyler Christian singled. Cooperstone followed with his home run to give the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead. Casey Ryan lined a double to left later in the inning, but was stranded at second.

Sonoma State then bunched together three hits and two Cal State L.A. errors to scored three times in the fifth, two of the runs being unearned.

Cal State L.A., after collecting six hits in the first five innings, were held without a hit over the final innings. Wallace retired 11 in a row to end the game and improved to 9-1 on the season.

Cedar Morgan followed Quintero's seven-inning outing with a strong eighth inning, blanking the Seawolves on just one hit to keep the game at 5-4.

Cal State L.A. will face No. 1 seed Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Otters eliminated Chico State in the early game on Friday. The winner of the Cal State L.A.- Cal State Monterey Bay game will face Sonoma State at 6 p.m. on Saturday, needing a win over the Seawolves to force a winner-take-all game on Sunday.
