Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team completed a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep over Cal State San Bernardino with a pair of victories over the Coyotes on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles got outstanding pitching from
Jordan Cavazos,
Adan Cabrales and
Brandon Quintero and home runs from
James Wharton,
Scott Masik and
Jeremy Weber in 14-2 and 5-2 wins over the Coyotes at Fiscalini Field. Cal State L.A. (21-13, 18-6 CCAA) kept pace with first-place Chico State and is just percentage points behind the Wildcats, who have played four fewer conference games.
Wharton had a pair of home runs, four runs scored and four RBI in the opener to back the pitching of Cavazos and Cabrales. Cavazos went a season-best six innings and gave up just three hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out one. Cabrales took over in the seventh inning and pitched three hitless innings to wrap things up.
In the nightcap, Quintero had another outstanding outing, allowing only five hits and two runs while recording his sixth win of the season. He didn't walk anyone and had three strikeouts.
Cal State L.A.'s pitching staff was sensational in the four-game series, allowing only four runs and posting a pair of shutouts.
Masik was 2-for-5 with two runs scored in the opener, while Weber scored two runs and drove in two.
Cody Doyle was 2-for-3 with three RBI and
Ryan Cooperstone,
Manny Acosta and
Casey Ryan had two hits each.
The Golden Eagles took control early in the opener thanks to a pair of home runs from Wharton, who now had a team-high eight on the season. He hit a solo shot in the first inning to open the scoring and then broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a three-run home run.
Tyler Christian had a run-scoring single in the fifth inning to give the Golden Eagles a 5-2 lead and the Golden Eagles scored five times in the sixth to take a 10-2 lead. Ryan drove in a run with an infield single, Weber drove in a run with a fielder's choice, Ryan later scored on an error and Doyle singled in a pair of runs.
The Golden Eagles scored three more times in the seventh on run-scoring singles by Ryan and Weber and a sacrifice fly by Doyle.
In the nightcap, a pair of run-scoring singles by David Silvas put the Coyotes ahead, 2-1, after three innings, but a sacrifice fly by Masik in the fourth tied it and another sacrifice fly by Weber put the Golden Eagles ahead, 3-2.
Masik and Weber hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to give the Golden Eagles a 5-2 edge.
Cal State L.A. will not have any games next week and will return to action with a four-game series against Cal State East Bay beginning with a game on Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field.
