Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had an unproductive day Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles mustered only three runs in the two games and were swept by the Otters, 5-2 and 9-1, at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (10-8, 8-3 CCAA) had a three-game winning streak snapped and fell into a second-place tie with Cal State Monterey Bay (13-5, 8-3 CCAA) in the CCAA.
Cal State L.A. received solid starts from both its starters on Saturday, but both came out on the short end of the decisions.
Omar Jimenez gave up just five hits and two runs in six solid innings of the opener, while
Brandon Quintero gave up four runs in six innings of the nightcap.
The problem for the Golden Eagles was that Cal State Monterey Bay's starters fared even better against Cal State L.A.'s lineup. Will Anderson allowed only five hits and two runs in the opener while improving to 3-2 on the season, while Jeff Owen moved to 4-0 after allowing only three hits and one run in six innings of the seven-inning nightcap.
Cal State L.A. also struggled defensively, committing five errors in the doubleheader. Cal State Monterey Bay did not commit an error in either game.
Both games were close early. The Golden Eagles erased a 1-0 deficit in the third inning of the opener when
Scott Masik singled to drive in
Manny Acosta to tie the game.
The Golden Eagles, though, didn't score again until the ninth inning. The Otters took the lead in the sixth on a fielder's choice RBI by Cannon Bernarding and extended their lead to 5-1 with three runs in the eighth, one coming on an error, one on a wild pitch and the other on a RBI single by Jesse Olson.
The Golden Eagles got a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by
Niko Garcia that scored
Tyler Christian.
In the nightcap, Quintero and Owen were locked in a pitcher's duel through five innings. Cal State L.A. took a 1-0 lead in the third on a run-scoring triple by Masik that drove in Garcia, but the Golden Eagles were unable to drive in Masik and then didn't threaten again until the final inning.
The Otters tied the game in the fourth on a run-scoring single by David Garcia and scored three more times in the sixth to take the lead. Brian Haggett drove in one run with a double to right, another run scored on a wild pitch and Tommy George singled up the middle for the final run.
Cal State Monterey Bay put the game out of reach in the seventh after scoring five times on four hits and three Cal State L.A. errors.
The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with no one out in the seventh after
Trevor Hopkins and
Peter Straka walked and
David Trejo singled to chase Owen. Jonas Noack came on and got the final three outs to secure the win.
Cal State L.A. will conclude the series with Cal State Monterey Bay with a single game on Sunday at Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
