Golden Eagles Get Defensive Again In Win Over Pioneers

Box Score HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team got defensive once again and picked up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association road victory in the process.

The Golden Eagles limited Cal State East Bay to just 25 percent shooting and beat the Pioneers, 54-35, Saturday night in Pioneer Gym. Cal State L.A. (12-8, 9-7) completed a weekend sweep and took over sole possession of fourth place in the CCAA.

Julian Camper had 13 points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles and Willie Trimble also had 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers that helped Cal State L.A. take control of the contest in the opening half. Jordan Richard had a big game as well with 10 points, eight rebounds and six blocks.

Gabe Kindred had 13 points and six rebounds for Cal State East Bay (5-15, 4-12 CCAA). Nick Marshall had seven points and seven rebounds.

Cal State L.A. didn't have a great shooting night, but the Golden Eagles made 42.3 percent of their shots in the first half, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range, to open up a 32-19 lead at halftime. The Golden Eagles led by double-digit margins for nearly the entire second half.

The Golden Eagles shot 37 percent for the game (17-of-46) and held Cal State East Bay to just 25.4 percent shooting (15-of-59). The Pioneers were just 3-of-19 from 3-point range and only 2-of-5 from the free-throw line. Cal State L.A. hit 14-of-18 from the free-throw line. Cal State L.A. had a slim 38-37 rebounding edge and both teams had 16 turnovers.

The Golden Eagles trailed early, 12-8, before Trimble scored 10 points during a game-changing 16-3 run that gave Cal State L.A. a 24-15 edge. Back-to-back baskets by Trimble tied the game at 12-12 before an offensive rebound and basket by Camper gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Camper then made a basket to make it 16-13 and Trimble connected on consecutive 3-pointers to stretch a 16-15 lead to a 22-15 advantage. Solomon Singer scored to complete the run and make it 24-15.

Richard and Cheyanne Alcala hit 3-pointers later in the half to help the Golden Eagles to a 32-19 halftime lead. After trailing 12-8, the Golden Eagles closed out the first half on a 24-7 run.

Cal State East Bay closed to within nine points at 36-27 early in the second half, but a layup by Richard and a dunk by Richard boosted the lead back to 42-27. A 3-pointer by Joshua Munzon gave the Golden Eagles a 45-29 lead with 10 minutes left and Cal State L.A. led by at least 13 points the rest of the game.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against San Francisco State.
