Box Score TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team struck for two first-half goals and let the defense do the rest in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles got goals from
Tobias Tobrant and
Abel Teferi and beat Sonoma State, 2-1, in a CCAA semi-final Friday at Cal State Stanislaus' Warrior Stadium. Cal State L.A. (13-1-5 CCAA) ran its unbeaten streak to 14 games with the victory. The tournament's No. 1 seeds, the Golden Eagles will face No. 2 seed UC San Diego in the conference championship game Sunday at 12:30 p.m. UC San Diego edged No. 3 seed Chico State in the first semi-final on Friday, 2-1, in overtime.
Cal State L.A. advanced past a Sonoma State team that was unbeaten over its last eight games and had a five-match winning streak to conclude conference play that earned the Seawolves (10-5-4) the CCAA North Division title.
The Golden Eagles will be making their third championship game appearance and their second in three years. Cal State L.A. won the tournament title in 2011 and has posted the conference's best record in three straight years. Cal State L.A. also beat Sonoma State in conference tournament play for the first time in four meetings. The Seawolves posted semi-final wins in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Cal State L.A. went into the tournament ranked No. 11 in the nation and No. 1 in the NCAA West Region.
Cal State L.A. had a 10-9 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Golden Eagles also had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Mike Beigarten and Sonoma State goalkeeper Beau Diaz both made three saves.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie in Rohnert Park on Oct. 4, but the two playoff participants struck for three goals in the first 29 minutes of Friday's games. After that, Cal State L.A.'s defense took over and allowed only two second-half shots by Sonoma State, only one that reached Beigarten.
Cal State L.A. needed only 65 seconds to take a 1-0 lead on a beautiful passing sequence that resulted in a goal by Tobrant.
Juan Ochoa started the play with a pass to
Andre Bissmark, who got the ball to Tobrant, who shot over Diaz for his fifth goal of the season. Ochoa picked up his team-high sixth assist, while Bissmark recorded his fifth assist.
The Golden Eagles' lead didn't last too long because Sonoma State got the equalizer in the 18th minute. A long pass from Aaron Glover to Brenton Frame that Frame headed into the goal for his first score of the season.
Cal State L.A. responded well to the game-tying goal and began to generate some pressure that soon resulted in the go-ahead goal. A failed clearance by Sonoma State was stolen by Teferi, who drilled a long shot through some traffic inside the near post for his first goal of the season in the 29th minute.
The Golden Eagles kept the pressure on early in the second half and had a couple of good chances before the defense clamped down on the Seawolves, allowing only two shots in the second period, one that was blocked and one by Sean Callahan that was saved by Beigarten in the 79th minute. That was the last shot Sonoma State would get and Cal State L.A. punched its ticket for the title game on Sunday.
Cal State L.A. will face UC San Diego, which is ranked 17th in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region for the third time this season on Sunday. The Golden Eagles posted a 1-0 win in Los Angeles on a goal by
Troy Dumlao on Sept. 15 and the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in La Jolla last Sunday with Bissmark getting the equalizer for the Golden Eagles in the 83rd minute.
