Golden Eagles Claim A Regular-Season Three-Peat

Box Score CCAA Tournament Annoucement

LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s scoreless streak came to an end Sunday, but not its lengthy unbeaten streak that resulted in the Golden Eagles claiming the best regular-season record in the California Collegiate Athletic Association for a third straight year and for the fourth time in five seasons.

No. 11 Cal State L.A. and No. 17 UC San Diego battled to a 1-1 tie in the regular season finale at Triton Stadium. The Golden Eagles saw their five-match scoreless streak come to an end, but they stretched their unbeaten streak to 13 games. Since their only regular-season loss at San Francisco State on Sept. 20, the Golden Eagles went 8-0-5 down the stretch to claim the top spot in the conference once again.

Cal State L.A. (12-1-5, 10-1-5 CCAA), which is also ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II West Region, will enter the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Golden Eagles will face No. 4 seed and North Division champion Sonoma State in a semi-final on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Cal State Stanislaus with the championship match set for Sunday. UC San Diego (13-2-3, 11-2-3 CCAA) finished second in the South and earns the No. 2 seed. The Tritons will face No. 3 seed Chico State.

The match Sunday was the type of hard-fought, tight-defensive struggle you'd expect from two nationally-ranked opponents. UC San Diego had a slight 16-15 advantage in shots and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. The Tritons also had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

Cal State L.A. won the first meeting between the two schools in Los Angeles, 1-0, on a goal early in the second half by Troy Dumlao.

Once again, the teams battled through a scoreless first half on Sunday. In fact, the game remained scoreless until the 76th minute when Andisheh Bagheri scored on a free kick to give the Tritons a 1-0 lead.

Cal State L.A. made some adjustments after the goal and began generating some more offense. The payoff came in the 83rd minute when Andre Bissmark scored his sixth goal of the season with assists to Juan Ochoa and Halil Tozar. Ochoa played the ball into the box from the left side and Tozar deftly laid it off for Bissmark, who blasted a volley into the net to tie it.

The Golden Eagles continued their pressure for the end of regulation and almost netted a game-winner, but UC San Diego goalkeeper Josh Cohen made a good save to stop a bid by Shane Panther in the 88th minute.

Neither team mustered much offense in the two overtime periods and the only two shots - both by UC San Diego - were blocked before reaching the goal.

Cal State L.A. will be making its third straight appearance in the CCAA Championship Tournament. The Golden Eagles won the title in 2011.
