Golden Eagles Clinch CCAA Tournament Bid With Tie

Box Score CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team was in bend-but-don't-break mode Sunday against Chico State and the two California Collegiate Athletic Association title defenders settled for a hard-fought 0-0 tie at University Soccer Stadium.

The results extended Cal State L.A.'s unbeaten streak to 11 games and the Golden Eagles (11-1-4, 9-1-4 CCAA) clinched a spot in the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament for a third straight year and for the seventh time in the past eight seasons. The Golden Eagles claimed the conference title in 2011.

Chico State (12-2-2, 10-2-2 CCAA) slipped into a tie for first place with UC San Diego with the tie. Both teams have 32 points and lead Cal State L.A. by one point. All three teams are in the conference tourney and will be joined by the CCAA North Division champion.

Cal State L.A. posted its fifth consecutive shutout and the Golden Eagles had to work to do it. Goalkeeper Mike Beigarten made six saves and another shot was saved by a defender before it crossed the goal-line. The Golden Eagles were outshot, 16-3, and Chico State also enjoyed a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.

Even so, it was the Golden Eagles who had a late chance to post an incredible victory. Halil Tozar ripped a shot that hit the far post with just 14 seconds remaining in the second overtime period. Tozar worked his way into the box and, after making the defense think he was going to pass, instead fired off the shot that just missed ending it.

Cal State L.A. had to weather the storm during a regulation period that saw Chico State accumulate nearly all of the scoring chances. The Wildcats had a 5-1 shot advantage in the opening half and then had a 10-1 advantage in the second half. The Wildcats also had seven of their 10 corner kicks in the second period.

The Wildcats really cranked up the pressure in the 70th minute. A header by Jake Ward off a corner kick was cleared away by a defender, resulting in another corner kick. A later shot by Tyson Crim was saved by Beigarten. Crim had another shot off a corner saved by Beigarten in the 75th minute.

Then, the Golden Eagle defense began to clamp down and the scoring opportunities disappeared. In fact, it was the Golden Eagles who had a late bid, but a corner kick in the 89th minute by Andre Bissmark was not converted.

Chico State then had the only shot in the first overtime and Tozar's late bid for a dramatic victory in the second overtime was the only shot in that period. Tozar is no stranger to late heroics. He had the overtime winner in a 3-2 victory over Humboldt State on Oct. 6.

Bissmark, Juan Ochoa and Tozar had the Cal State L.A. shots.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday night with its final home game of the season against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 4:30 p.m.
