SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team had a real battle on its hands Friday in San Bernardino, but the Golden Eagles were up for the challenge.
The Golden Eagles weathered a strong start by Cal State San Bernardino and got a second-half goal from Halil Tozar to beat the Coyotes, 1-0, Friday at Premier Field. Cal State L.A. (11-1-3, 9-1-3 CCAA) ran its unbeaten streak to 10 with the victory and also posted its fourth consecutive shutout.
Cal State L.A., ranked 12th in the nation and No. 1 in the NCAA Division II West Region, is 7-0-3 in its unbeaten streak. The Golden Eagles, for the moment, sit atop the CCAA South Division with 30 points. Chico State, which started the day in first place by one point, will host Cal State Dominguez Hills later this evening. The Wildcats will maintain their hold on first with a victory, while the Golden Eagles will take over with a tie or loss.
Mike Beigarten made three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles to pick up his eighth shutout and the team's ninth. Cal State L.A.'s backline of Dane Nielsen, Christhian Reyes, Daniel Rodriguez and Nathan Castillo was superb once again.
The Golden Eagles had to fight off a determined Cal State San Bernardino squad that came out strong. The Coyotes (4-10-3, 2-10-1) had the game's first six shots before the Golden Eagles settled in.
Cal State L.A. began generating some chances later in the half, most notably a bid by Jordan Payne that sailed just over the crossbar in the 44th minute.
Cal State San Bernardino had an 8-5 advantage in shots in the opening half.
The Golden Eagles, though, finally broke through in the 69th minute thanks to a scoring play between Andre Bissmark and Tozar. Bissmark found Tozar close to the Cal State San Bernardino goal and Tozar was able to fire a shot inside the far post for his fifth goal of the season.
Tozar and Bissmark now share the team lead in goals with five. Bissmark also picked up his fourth assist of the game.
The Coyotes generated some pressure in the latter stages of the match. A shot by Tigran Tiraturyan was blocked in the 79th minute, leading to a corner kick that was unproductive. The Coyotes got two more corner kicks in the 86th and 87th minutes and Beigarten was able to make a save on a shot by Mariscal to stop the final Cal State San Bernardino bid.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a match at Chico State at 2 p.m.
