Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team needed a strong rally to earn an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory and, for the second straight game, the Golden Eagles got one.
The Golden Eagles erased a 2-1 second-half deficit with the final three goals of the game in a 4-2 win over Cal State East Bay Friday at Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (8-1-2, 6-1-2 CCAA) kept pace in the ridiculously close CCAA South Division that had its top four teams record wins on Friday.
The come-from-behind win was the second straight for the Golden Eagles, who also erased a 2-1 deficit in a 3-2 overtime win Sunday at Humboldt State.
The Golden Eagles got goals from four different players in the victory.
Shane Panther opened the scoring in the first half with his first goal of the season and
Tobias Tobrant,
Andre Bissmark and
Jordan Payne scored goals after Cal State East Bay had taken a 2-1 lead. Goalkeeper
Mike Beigarten made three saves for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State East Bay (2-8-1, 2-6-1 CCAA) got goals from Chris Lara and Arthur Ethel. Arnol Arceta had two assists for the Pioneers, while goalkeeper Bryce Bookhamer had six saves.
The Golden Eagles struck first in the 19
th minute when Panther collected a rebound of a hard shot by Bissmark and ripped it inside the far post for his first goal of the season.
Cal State East Bay, though, tied it up in the 35
th minute when Lara hit a perfect shot from inside the box just inside the far post for his second goal of the season. Ethel and Arceta got assists.
Ethel put the Pioneers ahead when he ran down a through pass from Arceta and rifled a point-blank shot just off the fingertips of an onrushing Beigarten and into the net in the 47
th minute.
Cal State L.A. responded quickly and tied it up just one minute later.
Sigifredo Torres sent in a hard cross that was volleyed into the net by Tobrant for his second goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles then took a 3-2 lead when Bissmark slotted a shot past the keeper and into the left corner of the net. Panther had the assist.
Payne scored his second goal of the season in the 83
rd minute to put the game away. He ran down a through pass from
Juan Ochoa, controlled the ball, dribbled into the box and sent in a shot from in close inside the far post.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal State Stanislaus at 2 p.m.
