Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's team's explosive first half was met by an even bigger surge by San Francisco State in the second half.
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 39-21 halftime lead, but the Gators opened the second half with a 16-1 run and ultimately beat the Golden Eagles, 71-65, Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in The Swamp. Cal State L.A. (7-5, 4-4 CCAA) tried to rally back from nine points down in the final four minutes, but the Gators (8-4, 6-2 CCAA) made nine of their 10 free-throw attempts down the stretch to preserve their lead.
Jordan Richard had 15 points, nine rebounds and five blocks to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures.
Solomon Singer had 12 points and seven rebounds, while
Willie Trimble had 10 points.
Calvin Otiono had 20 points to lead the Gators, while William Overton, Jr. had 13 points, Decensae White had 12 points and six rebounds and James Albright had 10 points.
Marc Wilson and
Julian Camper had nine points each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. shot 45.8 percent for the game (27-of-59), while San Francisco State made 40.4 percent of its shots (23-of-57). The Gators made eight 3-pointers in 22 attempts, while the Golden Eagles were just 2-of-11. The Golden Eagles were 9-of-15 from the free-throw line, while San Francisco State was 17-of-25, including 15-of-21 in the second half.
The Golden Eagles held a 39-37 rebounding edge. Cal State L.A. had 17 turnovers, while San Francisco State had 18. The Golden Eagles committed 14 of their 17 turnovers in the second half, while the Gators committed 13 of their 18 turnovers in the first half.
The Golden Eagles spotted the Gators a 7-0 lead to start the game, but roared back to open up a 39-21 lead by halftime. Cal State L.A. finished the first half on an 18-3 run to take its biggest lead of the game. Camper started the run with a basket and
Joshua Munzon hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 26-18 lead. A three-point play by Singer gave the Golden Eagles a 29-20 lead and Trimble followed with a steal and layup to make it 31-20. After a San Francisco State free throw, the Golden Eagles got a dunk from Wilson, a tip-in by Wilson, two free throws by Wilson and a dunk by Trimble to close the half.
San Francisco State, though, scored the first nine points of the second half to quickly climb back into the contest. That was part of a 16-1 run that sliced the Golden Eagle lead to 40-36. A basket by Camper boosted the lead back to 47-39 with 11 minutes to go and the Golden Eagles still led, 49-42, after another basket by Camper with 10 minutes remaining.
A layup by Richard gave the Golden Eagles a 51-46 lead, but the Gators scored the next eight points to take the lead for good. A 3-pointer by Winson Demmin gave the Gators their biggest lead of the game at 62-53 with four minutes left.
Cal State L.A. fought back and pulled to within four points, 62-58, with 2:42 to play after a three-point play by Wilson and two free throws by Trimble got the Golden Eagles to within 64-60 with two minutes to go. The Golden Eagles edged to within three points, 66-63, after a basket by Munzon with 1:11 remaining and a jumper by Trimble kept the Golden Eagles within three points at 68-65, in the final minute. The Gators, though, hit three more free throws down the stretch to complete the comeback win.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against Chico State.
