Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team saw its six-match unbeaten streak come to an end Sunday in a hard-fought double overtime battle with Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles, who played a man down from the 17th minute of the game on, battled bacbk to tie the game at 1-1, but surrendered a goal in the second overtime and fell to the Toros, 2-1, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (6-3-1, 5-2-1), which had won five straight games heading into the week, managed only a tie at Cal State San Bernardino on Friday before the tough double overtime loss on Sunday.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-5-1, 4-4 CCAA) pulled to within four points of Cal State L.A. with the victory, which earned the Toros a season split with the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. had won the first meeting in Carson earlier this month, 2-0.
The Toros wound up with an 18-14 edge in shots. Cal State L.A. had a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden Eagles had the first big scoring chance of the game when
Halil Tozar flipped a shot toward the goal with Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Trey Mitchell out, but the shot went just outside the far post.
The Golden Eagles became short-handed in the 17th minute when
Dane Nielsen was issued a red card for a foul just outside the box. The Golden Eagles were able to stop the ensuing free kick, but Cal State Dominguez Hills began generating solid scoring chances the remainder of the first half.
The Toros took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when Christian Solo scored his third goal of the season. He stole a clearing attempt by the Golden Eagles and drilled a shot from about 25 yards out just got past the outstretched hands of Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Waleed Cassis and just inside the near post.
Soto had another good chance in the 41st minute when another bid by Soto went just wide. The Toros wound up with an 8-3 edge in shots in the opening half.
Cal State L.A., though, came out energized to start the second half and got the equalizer in the opening minute of the period.
Jordan Payne scored his first goal of the season when he was sent in with a pass from
Antti Arvola and knocked a shot inside the far post.
The Golden Eagles continued to pressure and almost took a 2-1 lead moments later when
Ricardo Sandoval took a shot that Mitchell was able to deflect out of play.
Tozar had another outstanding look in the 75th minute, but his curving shot just went wide.
Cal State Dominguez Hills had the final bid in regulation, but a shot by Ryan Evans had a shot inside the box sail high.
Cassis made his best save of his contest when he reached back to haul in a header from in close in the first overtime.
The Golden Eagles had the first attempt of the second overtime, but a shot by
Erick Escobedo went high and the Toros didn't miss when they got their first chance. Jio Santana got the goal with assists from Aaron Salazar and Evans when his shot through traffic from inside the box found the inside of the far post.
Cassis made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while Mitchell had six for the Toros.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against Cal Polly Pomona.
