Golden Eagles Pick Up A Key Win Over San Bernardino

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team was in desperate need of a win in California Collegiate Athletic Association play and the Golden Eagles went into San Bernardino on Friday and got it.

The Golden Eagles got a first-half goal from Tahne Apo and made it stand up in an important 1-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino Friday at Coyote Premier Field. Cal State L.A. (4-3-2, 3-3-1 CCAA) snapped a two-match winless streak and pulled into a second-place tie with Cal State San Bernardino (4-3-2, 3-3-1 CCAA) in the CCAA South Division.

It was a big game for the Golden Eagles, who struggled a home last week in a pair of games against CCAA North Division competition.

Cal State L.A. was held to a 1-1 draw with Cal State East Bay last Friday and then dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime decision to Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday. The Golden Eagles, though, started quickly on Friday against Cal State San Bernardino and then held on despite a persistent Coyote attack in the second half.

Cal State San Bernardino had a 19-9 advantage in shots, including a 12-2 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles and Coyotes were even in shots, 7-7, in the first half. Although the Coyotes had the big advantage in shots, the two teams were even in shots on goal, 6-6.

Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Gabriella Batmani made six saves for the Golden Eagles, while Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Priscilla Collins had four saves for the Coyotes.

Apo notched her second goal of the season to give the Golden Eagles an early lead in the 18th minute. She got a pass from Sydney Mullen and drilled a shot from 35 yards out into the goal.

Cal State L.A. had the edge early on and got a pair of quick scoring chances from Norie Pablo. The first was saved by Collins and the second was kept out of the goal by a Cal State San Bernardino defender.

Although Cal State San Bernardino took 12 shots in the second half, Batmani was only called upon to make three saves. Her final save came on a shot by Kelly Keyes. The Coyotes had three more shots and two corner kicks the rest of the way, but could not score.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday at 2 p.m.
