Golden Eagles Settle For 0-0 Draw With CS San Bernardino

Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team had to settle for a draw Friday against one of the nation's top defensive teams.

The Golden Eagles, who have been outstanding defensively lately as well, were held to a 0-0 tie Friday by Cal State San Bernardino in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Coyote Premier Field. Cal State L.A. (6-2-1, 5-1-1 CCAA) maintained a three-point lead over Cal State San Bernardino (3-0-6, 3-0-4) in the CCAA South Division.

The Golden Eagles' three-point lead in the division was pending a match between third-place UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills later Friday evening.

Cal State L.A. stretched its unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1) while posting its fifth shutout in that span. The Golden Eagles have allowed only one goal in its last six games after allowing three first-half goals to Chico State in their conference opener.

The Coyotes, meanwhile, improved on their glossy defensive stats. Cal State San Bernardino posted its seventh shutout of the season and third straight. Cal State San Bernardino was No. 1 in the country in goals against average, shutout percentage and save percentage heading into the week and those numbers improved after Friday's result.

Neither goalkeeper was required to do much heavy lifting for the dual shutout. Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Waleed Cassis made two saves, while Cal State San Bernardino's Tanner Olinger made one save.

The Coyotes had a strong bid to win the game in the first overtime period, but a shot by Ricardo Velasco hit the post. Velasco had nine shots in the contest.

Cal State San Bernardino had a 19-12 advantage in shots, but only three of the combined 31 shots were on frame.

Jordan Payne had three shots for the Golden Eagles. Antti Arvola had a bid in the 109th minute blocked. Luis Trujillo had the only shot on goal in the game for the Golden Eagles, a header in the fourth minute that was saved by Olinger. Cassis made one save in each half for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home contest against Cal State Dominguez Hills beginning at 11:30 a.m.
