Golden Eagles Record Fourth Straight Shutout Victory

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team continued its winning ways with a solid performance Friday in Jesse Owens Stadium.

The Golden Eagles scored one goal in each half and blanked Cal State East Bay, 2-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. Cal State L.A. (5-2, 4-1 CCAA) won its fourth straight match and also posted its fourth straight shutout. After allowing three first-half goals in their conference opener at Chico State, the Golden Eagles have not surrendered a goal in their last nine halves.

Cal State L.A., the defending CCAA and NCAA Division II West Region champions, continues to lead the CCAA South Division with 12 points.

Cal State L.A. got goals from Rosario Bras and Antti Arvola, who have combined to score nine of the team's 11 goals so far this season. Ricardo Sandoval and Jordan Payne had assists and Waleed Cassis made three saves in goal.

Cal State East Bay (0-2-2), which came into the game after posting road ties at Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus last week, got a combined seven saves for its two goalkeepers. Rene Martinez played the first half and made five saves, while Bryce Bookhamer made two saves in the second half. The only goal he allowed came on a penalty shot.

The Golden Eagles had a 15-5 advantage in shots, including an 11-3 edge in the first half. Cal State L.A. also had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal State L.A. took two penalty shots in the game, one in each half. Halil Tozar's hard shot in the first half clanked off the post, but Arvola didn't miss on his try in the second half that gave the Golden Eagles some breathing room.

Bras opened the scoring for Cal State L.A. in the 30th minute and he had plenty of help from his teammates. Payne started the play with a nice pass to Sandoval, who crossed the ball into the box. Bras, the 2011 CCAA Newcomer of the Year, took it from there, quickly flicking a shot into the goal. Bras now has a team-leading five goals.

Even though they had controlled most of the action, the Golden Eagles only had a 1-0 lead against a strong Cal State East Bay defense until Arvola made it 2-0 with his penalty kick following a foul in the box.

Cal State L.A.'s defense took it from there, allowing only two shots in the second half.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
