LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team came up with a big performance Saturday to complete a season sweep over a longtime NCAA Division II West Region opponents.

The Golden Eagles won two of three doubles contests and then won five of the six singles matches to post a 7-2 win over UC San Diego at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (12-4), which also beat the Tritons (6-11) earlier this season in La Jolla, beat UC San Diego in a season series for the first time in the program's history.

The Golden Eagles, ranked 17th in the nation, won its second match in two days. Cal State L.A. opened the weekend with a win over NCAA Division I Cal State Bakersfield on Friday.

After the two teams split the first two doubles matches off the court -- Cal State L.A. won at No. 1 doubles and UC San Diego won at No. 3 doubles -- Cal State L.A.'s Leora Hemmerich and Jill Sangria rallied for a 9-8 win at No. 2 doubles. The Cal State L.A. won the tiebreaker, 7-4. Cal State L.A.'s Christie Lau and Larn McShane won at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, while UC San Diego's Katie Mulloy and Laura Wilke won at No. 3 doubles, 8-5.

The Golden Eagles then won the first four singles positions in straight sets, while Tiffany Leung won a third-set tiebreaker to get the win at No. 5 singles. Lau won at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4, over Melissa Breisacher, McShane beat UC San Diego's Melinda Chu, 6-4, 6-4, Hemmerich beat Tara Vanootgehm, 6-3, 6-4 and Sangria beat Samantha Yeung, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Leung held off Krystal Mizuguchi at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-7, (10-6).

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Tuesday with a home match against Cal State Stanislaus.
