Golden Eagles Come Up Empty In Opener At UC San Diego

Box Score

LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had a quite opener to its important four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles were unable to generate any offense and fell to the conference-leading Tritons, 3-0, Thursday at Triton Ballpark. Cal State L.A. (22-17, 18-15 CCAA) collected eight hits, but only one was for extra bases. The Golden Eagles left seven runners on base.

It was a costly loss for the Golden Eagles, who fell out of a tie for fourth place in the CCAA with idle Cal State Stanislaus. Cal State L.A. slipped to just 7-13 on the road.

Ryan Santhon did a nice job holding down UC San Diego (27-18, 25-12), which increased its conference lead with the win. The Tritons managed only four hits, but Santhon walked eight in 6 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs and kept the Golden Eagles in the game. Cedar Morgan was effective in relief, blanking the Tritons over the final 1 1/3 innings after getting the Golden Eagles out of a two-on, two-out jam in the seventh.

Cliff Quick had two hits for the Golden Eagles, while six other players had one hit. Daniel Duran had the only extra-base hit for the Golden Eagles, picking up a two-out double in the third. Cal State L.A. had hits in the first six innings, but could not score.

UC San Diego's Ryan Goodbrand improved to 8-0 after gong seven innings. He gave up seven hits and walked one while striking out six. Elias Tuma blanked the Golden Eagles over the final two innings for his second save.

The series will continue with a single game at UC San Diego on Friday and conclude with a doubleheader at Reeder Field on Saturday. That will also be Senior Day for Cal State L.A. and 11 seniors will be honored in between games.
