Golden Eagles Work A Bit Extra For Conference Overtime Win

Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team got a game-winning strike from Halil Tozar to put a sudden end to a big struggle Sunday with San Francisco State.

Tozar drilled a shot from just inside the box into the goal to lift the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 victory over the Gators Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (8-3-1, 7-2-1 CCAA) is now 7-1-1 over its last nine games and reclaimed the CCAA South Division by two points over idle UC San Diego.

Tozar was in perfect position to end the game Sunday in overtime and he did not miss. A long throw-in into the box was headed away from the goal by a San Francisco State defender in a crowd, but an onrushing Tozar got to it first and blasted his shot just inside the near post from about 14 yards out. It was Tozar's second goal of the season.

It was a sudden end to a match that was competitive throughout. Cal State L.A. wound up with a 20-10 advantage in shots and each team had three corner kicks. Anthony Rodriguez made 10 saves for the Gators, while Waleed Cassis made two saves for the Golden Eagles.

It was a rough first half for both teams as a combined three starters were sidelined by injuries.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when Hughes, who had just entered the game as a substitute, scored his second goal in as many games. Tozar outworked the Gator defense and sent a nice pass to Antti Arvola, who slid a soft pass to a wide-open Hughes, who buried the shot inside the near post.

San Francisco State (1-8-3, 0-6-3) started generating some chances in the second half and got the equalizer in the 49th minute. Luis Mendoza did the scoring honors after finding himself alone after a pass from Luis Fidel Medina. He was able to quickly control it and punch in a shot past Cassis to tie it.

The Gators then had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 67th minute when Eric Espinosa headed a ball that seemed to destined to go in, but Cal State L.A. defender Daniel Rodriguez dove in and headed the ball away from danger to keep the game tied. San Francisco State was unable to score on the ensuing corner kick.

San Francisco State had another big chance, but a bid by Chris Behroozian was batted over the crossbar by Cassis in the 80th minute.

The Golden Eagles got the first chance in the overtime period and made it count.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road game at UC San Diego. The Golden Eagles lead the Tritons by two points, although UC San Diego has played one fewer conference game.
