Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team needed two wins this week to have a shot at qualifying for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament, but the Golden Eagles had to settle for a tie Friday.
The Golden Eagles got a first-half goal from
Megan Ollar, but San Francisco State got the equalizer in the second half and the two foes battled to a 1-1 tie at Cox Stadium. Cal State L.A. (7-5-5, 5-5-4) and San Francisco State battled to a tie for the second time this season.
Cal State L.A. started the day five points behind second-place Cal Poly Pomona, which now locks up the final spot in the four-team CCAA Championship Tournament. The Broncos also played to a tie on Friday, 2-2, against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Golden Eagles got an early score when Ollar notched her fourth goal of the season. She headed in a free kick from
Raquel Gervas, who lofted the ball near the goal from about 30 yards out.
San Francisco State, though, tied it at 1-1 in the 66th minute when Michelle Kay scored her fifth goal of the season with an assist from Justine Hernandez. Kay was about 10 yards out when she placed her shot in the goal.
Neither team could solve the other's defense the rest of the way, although the shot totals for both teams were relatively high. Cal State L.A. finished with a 23-21 advantage in shots, including a 14-8 edge in shots on goal. Annicia Jones had 14 saves for the Gators, while
Gabriella Batmani had a strong game and had seven saves for the Golden Eagles.
Heather Williams had six shots to lead Cal State L.A., while
Tahne Apo had three.
The Golden Eagles had a couple chances in the second overtime and they fought to keep their conference tournament hopes alive.
Norie Pablo had a shot in the 109th minute saved by Jones and Batmani came up with a save in the final minute to keep the Golden Eagles even. A final shot by
Alexandra Barrett-Scherrer sailed wide as time ran out.
Cal State L.A. will conclude its regular season on Sunday with a match at Cal Poly Pomona.
