Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team appeared on its way to an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory, but the Golden Eagles wound up having to settle for a tie.
The Golden Eagles held a 2-0 lead into the 77th minute, but San Francisco State struck for two quick goals to tie it and the teams ended up battling to a 2-2 draw Friday at Cox Stadium. Cal State L.A. (10-3-3, 9-2-3 CCAA) earned one point for the tie and now has 30 points. The Golden Eagles have earned their way into the conference tournament, but left the door open for Cal State Dominguez Hills to pull into a share for the CCAA South Division lead after the Toros won at Cal Poly Pomona.
Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus of the North Division are already in the conference tourney, while Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills will represent the South Division.
Cal State L.A. entered the match ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II West Region rankings.
The match against San Francisco State turned into a wild affair in the second half. After a scoreless first half that saw San Francisco State hold a 9-3 advantage in shots, the second half featured four goals, 14 fouls and five yellow cards.
Cal State L.A. got on the board in the 51st minute when
Miguel Hernandez scored his first goal of the season. He was sent in on a breakaway by
Oscar Carrillo and sent his shot into the upper corner of the net and past San Francisco State goalkeeper Anthony Rodriguez.
Less than six minutes later,
Antti Arvola scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season when he was able to get to a rebound of his own missed penalty kick and knock it into the goal. Rodriguez had made the initial save, but Arvola quickly reacted and gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
San Francisco State, though, was able to fight back and even the match with two goals in a five-minute span. Jorge Valadas scored his first goal of the season when his shot from about five yards out found the net. Jason Borges got the assist.
Then, in the 82nd minute, Borges bounced a shot off the post and in for his third goal of the season. Nathan Fernandez had the assist.
Neither team had a shot in the first overtime period, while Cal State L.A. had two shots and San Francisco State had one shot in the second overtime.
Each team had 16 shots in the match and Cal State L.A. had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Waleed Cassis had six saves for the Golden Eagles, while Rodriguez had two saves for the Gators.
Cal State L.A. will try to wrap up its second straight CCAA South Division crown on Sunday with a match at Cal Poly Pomona.
