Golden Eagles Unable To Hold Big Lead Against Seawolves

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team saw its hopes for a big weekend sweep in California Collegiate Athletic Assocation play vanish in stunning fashion.

The Golden Eagles surrendered the last 16 points of regulation and the first five points in overtime and fell to Sonoma State, 67-62, Saturday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-3, 5-3 CCAA) held a 56-40 lead with 4:40 remaining, but endured a seven-minute scoreless stretch that lasted into the overtime period.

Cal State L.A. committed six turnovers and missed the front end of three one-and-ones down the stretch. The Golden Eagles also committed a foul after a missed free throw with seven seconds remaining that enabled Sonoma State to tie the game at the free-throw line. A last-second 3-point attempt by Quinton Watkins that would have won it was straight, but just short.

The Golden Eagles lost despite holding Sonoma State (5-7, 3-5 CCAA) to just 31.1 percent shooting. The Seawolves, though, were 24-of-30 from the free-throw line, while Cal State L.A. was just 12-of-19.

Watkins had a game-high 20 points for the Golden Eagles, while Leland Jones had 14 poinst and six rebounds before fouling out. Jordan Richard had a game-high 14 rebounds.

Patrick Scott had 16 points for the Seawolves, while Justin Herold had 14 points and 13 rebounds and Steven Pratt had 14 points and nine rebounds. Will Olsem had 11 points. Sterling Arterberry knocked down the two free throws to tie the game late in regulation.

Cal State L.A. shot 40.4 percent for the game (23-of-57) and shot 52.4 percent in the second half (11-of-21). The Golden Eagles, though, missed their only two field-goal attempts in the final four minutes and also went 0-of-3 from the line.

Sonoma State enjoyed a 43-40 rebounding edge and had 15 turnovers to 22 for the Golden Eagles.

The Seawolves led by as many as three points early in the game, but the Golden Eagles used a late surge to open up a 29-21 halftime lead. A free throw by Jones, a 3-pointer by Ryan Wetherell and a layup by Jibreel Nasir keyed the late run to end the half.

Cal State L.A. then opened up leads as large as 17 points in the second half and appeared to be on its way to an impressive follow-up to Friday's 68-48 win over Humboldt State. A 3-pointer by Trevor Hopkins gave the Golden Eagles a 54-37 lead with 5:40 to go and a basket by Robinson made it 56-40.

Then everything fell apart. Herold scored on an offensive rebound to start the Seawolf charge and a turnover was converted into a Pratt layup. A steal by Scott led to a quick layup by Atterberry, a missed Cal State L.A. 3-pointer was followed by a layup by Pratt and after a steal of the inbounds pass, Olsem knocked down a quick 3-pointer and suddenly it was 56-51 with 2:30 to go. The teams combined for three straight turnovers before Herold made one of two free throws to make it 56-52. Arterberry made two of four free-throw attempts on Sonoma State's next two possessions to make it 56-54 and after another foul following a missed free throw, Arterberry hit his game-tying shots.

Arterberry scored on a layup to open the overtime period and Herold converted a three-point play to complete a 21-0 run by Sonoma State. Wetherell hit a 3-pointer to finally break the drought and closing the Golden Eagle deficit to 61-59. The Golden Eagles, though, didn't score again until a 3-pointer by Watkins made it 65-62. Pratt hit two free throws to complete the unlikely win for the Seawolves.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a road game at Cal State Stanislaus.
