Golden Eagles Score Early And Post Shutout Over Coyotes

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team made two quick goals stand up for its second straight shutout victory.

The Golden Eagles got first-half goals from Lisa Ohberg and Melina Barragan and blanked Cal State San Bernardino, 2-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game Friday night in Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (4-2-1, 2-2-1), after starting off the conference schedule with back-to-back 1-0 losses, is now unbeaten in its last three contests.

Cal State L.A. had a 15-10 advantage in shots over Cal State San Bernardino (2-4-1, 0-4-1 CCAA). The Coyotes had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Jessie Walworth had seven saves for the Golden Eagles, while Tiffany Mallick had six saves for the Coyotes. Mallick made back-to-back saves on chances by Cal State L.A.'s Janet Mendez in the first half and stopped Gabbi Segall on a breakaway in the second half to keep her team close.

The Golden Eagles scored both goals in a four-minute span in the first half. The first was a beautiful goal by Ohberg, who drilled a shot from well outside the box past a diving Mallick and into the upper portion of the goal. The score was Ohberg's third goal of the season.

The second goal came on a penalty kick by Barragan after Andrea Lammers was fouled in the box. That goal came in the 29th minute.

The Coyotes had a pair of strong chances before the half ended, but Walworth made a diving save of a hard shot by Kellie Valverde. Later, she made a save of a shot by Brittany Wilding that led to a Cal State San Bernardino corner kick.

Cari Gill had a strong bid in the opening minute of the second half, but her header went off the post. Segall later had a breakaway, but Mallick was able to come out of her goal and made a solid save. Shereen Khoobbagha sent a hard shot just wide of the goal in the 61st minute and Lammers had a golden opportunity late in the game, but her bid sailed high from point-blank range.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
