TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was able to salvage the finale of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Cal State Stanislaus.
The Golden Eagles scored early and rode the outstanding pitching of
Wally Goodline to a 7-2 victory over the Warriors Sunday at Warrior Baseball Field. Cal State L.A. (25-21, 19-17 CCAA) snapped a three-game losing streak and pulled a little closer to the top four spots in the CCAA.
Cal State L.A. remains in sixth place in the conference, one game back of fifth-place Cal Poly Pomona and 1 1/2 games back of fourth-place Sonoma State. The top four teams will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.
All top six teams will face off in the final weekend of the regular season. First-place UC San Diego (25-11 in conference) will finish with a four-game series against third-place Cal State San Bernardino (20-14 in conference), while second-place Chico State (21-13 in conference) faces fourth-place Sonoma State (20-15 in conference). Cal State L.A. will face fifth-place Cal Poly Pomona (20-16 in conference) to finish the regular season.
Goodline gave up only three hits in a tremendous eight-inning effort. He walked three and struck out seven while improving to 5-3 on the season.
Jacob Valenzuela worked the ninth inning to complete the victory.
Cal State L.A. jumped out to an early lead for the first time in the season, scoring four times in the second to take control. The Golden Eagles tacked on another two runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth.
Cliff Quick had two hits and two RBI,
Chad Nacapoy had two hits and a run scored,
David Compton scored two runs and drove in two and
Michael Vinyard,
Manny Acosta and
Chris Matzner drove in runs.
Brian Compton singled to start the four-run second inning for the Golden Eagles. Nacapoy followed with a double and Acosta was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Matzner drove in the first run with a groundout and
David Compton followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0. Vinyard singled in the final run of the inning.
Goodline didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning when David Contreras picked up a one-out double. He limited the Warriors to single hits in the seventh and eighth innings and departed with a 7-0 lead.
Cal State L.A. stretched its lead to 6-0 in the seventh. Vinyard drew a one-out walk and
Elliott Russell singled to set things up. Quick singled in one run and a fielder's choice by Acosta drove in the second run. Quick doubled in a run in the eighth inning to complete the Golden Eagles' scoring.
Cal State L.A. will conclude the regular season with a four-game series against Cal Poly Pomona that will begin on Thursday in Pomona.
