Golden Eagles Open CCAA Series With Win Over Otters

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against Cal State Monterey Bay off to a good start on a chilly Friday evening at Reeder Field.

The Golden Eagles got outstanding pitching from Wally Goodline and Thomas Landeros and beat the Otters, 5-1. Goodline allowed only five hits and one run over eight outstanding innings and Landeros pitched a hitless ninth inning and struck out two to complete the win.

Cal State L.A. (21-12, 16-9 CCAA) had seven hits in the game, including a go-ahead solo home run from Noe Flores in the sixth inning.

Cal State Monterey Bay (12-17, 9-11 CCAA) also received outstanding pitching from starter Scott Tully and reliever Patrick Fletcher, but the Otters committed five errors, including three in the seventh inning that helped the Golden Eagles score three times. Tully allowed seven hits and three earned runs over six innings, while walking two and striking out four. Fletcher blanked the Golden Eagles on no hits over the final two innings.

Flores and Manny Acosta both collected two hits for the Golden Eagles, while Tyler Young picked up two hits for the Otters.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Flores doubled to lead off the inning. He then stopped well off the bag at second on a pitch in the dirt, but raced to third when Tully's throw went to second for a stolen base. He scored on a groundout to second base by Chris Matzner.

The Otters tied the game in the fourth when Greg Fujii walked, took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a base hit by Danny Nelson.

Flores' two-out home run in the bottom of the inning put the Golden Eagles ahead for good.

Matzner started the three-run seventh inning rally that put the game away for Cal State L.A. He took third on a single by Acosta and scored when Joe Park beat out an infield single and the runners advanced on a throwing error. Chad Nacapoy reached on an error that allowed Acosta to score and Cliff Quick reached on yet another error that allowed Park to score.

That was more than enough support for Goodline, who didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and gave up only three hits through seven innings.

Cal State L.A. will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Reeder Field beginning at 1 p.m.
