LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team enjoyed a nice ending to its 2011 dual match season.
The Golden Eagles rallied by capturing four of the six singles contests in a big 5-4 win over Sonoma State Wednesday at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (8-13) needed all four of those singles points after dropping two of the three doubles contests to Sonoma State (11-8).
Cal State L.A. also exacted a measure of revenge for a 6-3 loss to the Seawolves in Rohnert Park earlier this month.
The Golden Eagles certainly improved greatly over the course of the season. In their last five matches, the Golden Eagles were 3-2 with wins over nationally-ranked NAIA programs Vanguard and Azusa Pacific and also Sonoma State. The only blemishes over that span were 5-4 losses to Division I San Jose State and this past weekend at UC San Diego.
Christie Lau and
Larn McShane won again at No. 1 doubles, posting an 8-2 victory over Sonoma State's Anastasia Eliseeva and Megan White, but that was the only doubles point for Cal State L.A.
The Golden Eagles, though, won the first four spots in singles, all in straight sets, to secure the victory. Lau won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, over Dana Carollo, McShane won at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1 over Eliseeva,
Jillian Sangria won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 7-5, over White and
Linda Majzlikova won at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-1, over Haley Hickock.
Cal State L.A. will send a group of players to the Ojai Tournament beginning on April 28.
