Golden Eagles Drop Series Finale Against Monterey Bay

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was unable to end its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series with Cal State Monterey Bay on a good note.
 
The Golden Eagles allowed 16 hits and nine walks and fell to the Otters, 13-2, Sunday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (22-14, 17-11 CCAA) was forced to settle for a series split with improving Cal State Monterey Bay (14-18, 11-12 CCAA).
 
The Golden Eagles continued to have trouble scoring runs against Cal State Monterey Bay and managed only two on nine hits on Sunday. All nine Cal State L.A. hits on Sunday were singles.
 
Cal State Monterey Bay, meanwhile, scored early to take the lead and then put the game away by scoring nine runs over its final four at bats. The Otters had six doubles in the contest.
 
Brian Moon had two hits and had the only RBI for Cal State L.A., while Brian Compton also had two hits.
 
Nolan Murray had four hits to lead Cal State Monterey Bay, which also got two hits from Chris Lopiccolo, Tyler Young and Randall Packard.
 
Paul Brock pitched seven innings and didn't allow an earned run for the Otters. He gave up eight hits, walked two and struck out five. Austin Thiel, David Holland and Mike Wilson combined to allow only one hit over the final two innings.
 
Anthony Lopez started for the Golden Eagles and allowed four hits and three earned runs over 3 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out one. Elliott Russell got the final two outs of the eighth inning and was the only one of five Cal State L.A. pitchers who didn't allow a run.
 
The only runs for Cal State L.A. came in the third inning and cut the Otters' lead to 3-2. Joe Park singled, took second on an error, stole third and came home on a wild throw from the catcher. Moon then singled with two outs to score Cliff Quick.
 
The Otters added one run in the fourth to make it 4-2 and then scored three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh, two in the eighth and two in the ninth to put the game away.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with the opener of a four-game conference series at Chico State.
