ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team has found the going rough in its series against California Collegiate Athletic Association leader Sonoma State.
The Golden Eagles endured their second walk-off defeat in as many days and dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, 5-0 and 3-2, Saturday at Seawolf Diamond. Cal State L.A. (15-8, 10-5) has lost the first three games of the four-game series, two by one-run in Sonoma State's final at bat.
The Seawolves completed the sweep with a game-winning, bases-loaded single by Kyle Cerrudo in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Golden Eagles had a runner on second base with one out in both sixth and seventh innings, but could not score. Cal State L.A. left eight runners on base.
Gabriel Asakura, last week's NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week, pitched well again on Saturday, but did not get a decision. He went six innings and gave up just one earned run while walking four and striking out eight. Sonoma State (14-2, 9-2 CCAA) scored a pair of runs in the second inning off of Asakura on a throwing error with the bases loaded.
After trailing 2-0 after two innings, Cal State L.A. climbed back into the game with single runs in the third and fifth innings. In the third,
Brian Compton doubled to lead off the inning, took third on a single by
Manny Acosta and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Joe Park. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with one out, but score any more after have two straight runners forced out at home.
The Golden Eagles tied it at 2-2 in the fifth.
Jordan Castro picked up an infield single and took second on a single by
Cliff Quick. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and Castro scored when
Brian Moon reached base on an error.
Chad Nacapoy was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth and took second on a sacrifice by
Chris Matzner, but the Golden Eagles couldn't bring him in. Castro singled with one out and took second on a wild pitch, but he, too, was stranded.
The Seawolves then bunched together three hits off Cal State L.A. closer
Thomas Landeros in the seventh to walk off with the win.
Castro was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
In the opener, Cal State L.A. also left eight runners on base and couldn't score against Sonoma State starter Kenny Arnerich, who blanked the Golden Eagles on five hits over eight innings. Phil Liniger worked a scoreless ninth to end it.
David Arredondo worked five innings for Cal State L.A., allowing 10 hits and four runs and taking the loss.
Nick Rodarte pitched well in relief, blanking the Seawolves on no hits over two innings while striking out four.
Nacapoy was 2-for-4, while Moon, Quick, Compton and Acosta picked up hits.
The Golden Eagles will try to salvage the finale of the four-game series on Sunday at Seawolf Diamond.
