ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had a tough result in its first road game of the 2011 season.
After going 15-5 in their first 20 games at home, the Golden Eagles were beaten on a two-out, infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning by Sonoma State, 3-2, Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Seawolf Field. Cal State L.A. (15-6, 10-3 CCAA) scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to send the game into extra innings.
Wally Goodline turned in an outstanding start for the Golden Eagles, going 7 2/3 innings and allowing seven hits and two earned runs. He allowed both runs in the first inning on four hits and then blanked the Seawolves for the rest of his outing on only three hits.
Sonoma State (12-2, 7-2 CCAA) got singles from its first three batters and four of its first five to take a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. O'Koyen Dickson and Randy Wells drove in runs with singles. Goodline avoided further damage by inducing an inning-ending double play.
The Golden Eagles, though, weren't able to muster up much offense, either. Cal State L.A. was held scoreless through the first five innings before breaking through in the sixth.
Joe Park started the rally with a double, moved to third on a groundout by
Chris Matzner and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brian Moon.
Cal State L.A. tied it at 2-2 in the seventh.
Jordan Castro was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced on a bunt single by
Chad Nacapoy.
Brian Compton sacrificed the runners to second and third and
Manny Acosta drove in the tying run with a groundout.
Acosta gave the Golden Eagles a chance in the top of the 10th inning with a two-out double, but he was stranded there.
Sonoma State bunched together two singles, a double steal and then the two-out infield single off
Jacob Valenzuela to get the win.
Cliff Quick had a pair of hits for Cal State L.A.
The two teams will continue the four-game conference series with a doubleheader on Saturday.
