LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team returned home and picked up its first victory of the 2011 season.
The Golden Eagles, after dropping two road matches at NCAA Division I schools to open the season, beat Dominican University of California, 9-0, Saturday on the Cal State L.A. Tennis Courts in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex. Cal State L.A. (1-2) picked up an NCAA Division II West Region victory over the Penguins, who are members of the Pacific West Conference.
Cal State L.A. started quickly and won all three doubles points before capturing all six singles contests in straight sets.
Christie Lau won her second straight match, beating Dominican's Irina Morozova, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.
Larn McShane beat Sharron Contreras, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles,
Linda Majzlikova beat Michele Freitas at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-4,
Jillian Sangria beat Jamie Fernandez, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 singles,
Charlotte Spassoff beat Anh Truong, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles and
Maria Xavier beat Ryan Paulus, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 6 singles.
Lau and McShane won at No. 1 doubles, 8-0; Sangria and Spassoff won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3 and Majzlikova and
Joyce Librando won at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a match against Dixie State College in the Phoenix Duals in Phoenix, AZ. The Golden Eagles will play four matches during the three-day tourney.
