Golden Eagles Save Their Best For Last -- Twice

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team saved its best for last in both ends of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles got a game-winning double from Noe Flores in the ninth inning of the opener and a game-winning single from Daniel Duran in the 10th inning of the nightcap to sweep Cal State San Bernardino, 3-2 and 2-1, Sunday at Reeder Field.

Cal State L.A. (11-5, 6-2 CCAA) was able to earn a split of the four-game series. Cal State San Bernardino (5-7, 3-3 CCAA) had won single games on Thursday and Friday.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played in San Bernardino on Saturday, but the heavy rains on Friday rendered the field unplayable and the series was switched to Reeder Field on Sunday.

Both games featured outstanding pitching and dramatic endings.

In the opener, Cal State San Bernardino starter Aaron Brooks pitched all 8 1/3 innings for the Coyotes and allowed seven hits and three runs. He didn't walk a batter and struck out seven.

The Golden Eagles countered with three pitchers. Starter Nathan Pickett had a good outing, allowing five hits and two runs in 5 2/3 solid innings. Nick Rodarte followed and didn't allow a run or a hit over 1 1/3 innings. Jacob Valenzuela finished up, blanking the Coyotes over the final two innings, allowing only one hit and striking out three.

Runs were hard to come by. The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a double by Matt Haney and a single by Mike Newell..

The Golden Eagles tied it in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by Joe Park.

Cal State L.A. took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a solo home run by Chad Nacapoy, but Cal State San Bernardino tied it in the fifth on a solo home run by Haney.

The score stayed tied at 2-2 until the ninth when Nacapoy was hit by a pitch with one out. Jordan Castro followed with a single and Flores doubled to left center to drive in Nacapoy with the winning run.

In the nightcap, Cal State L.A. starter Gabriel Asakura and Cal State San Bernardino starter Casey McCarthy were outstanding, each pitching six innings. Asakura left with a 1-0 lead after blanking the Coyotes on four hits. He walked one and struck out six.

McCarthy allowed only seven hits and one run in his six innings of work. He also walked only one and struck out six. Cal State L.A.'s only run off him was a solo shot by Park in the bottom of the fifth.

The Coyotes got an unearned run in the seventh off Cal State L.A. closer Thomas Landeros to tie it, but he got out of further trouble and then pitched a scoreless eighth. Cliff Quick came on and pitched two scoreless innings to earn the victory.

Cal State San Bernardino's bullpen was unhittable until the final two batters of the game. Josh Pond struck out all four hitters he faced over 1 1/3 innings and Trevor Longfellow struck out the first two hitters he faced in the 10th.

Chris Matzner, though, lined a two-out double into the left-field corner and scored on a line drive hit to right-center by Duran.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with the opener of a four-game series at home against Cal State East Bay.
