OAKLAND – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team fared well in its first road game of the 2011-12 season.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 45-23 halftime lead and never looked back in a 78-49 victory over Holy Names Monday afternoon in Oakland. Cal State L.A. (6-1) has now won two straight games after suffering its lone setback against Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles were efficient offensively and shot 51.7 percent (31-of-60) for the game, while holding the Hawks (5-7) to just 28.6 percent (16-of-56). Cal State L.A. also enjoyed a 39-25 rebounding edge.
All five Cal State L.A. starters scored in double figures.
Carl Hoffman led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds, while
Quinton Watkins had 14 points and six rebounds.
Leland Jones had 13 points,
Ryan Wetherell scored 11 points and
Chris Robinson had 10 points and five rebounds.
Karlos Grier had 12 points to lead the Hawks.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead and never trailed. Holy Names got to within four points at 12-8, but a 3-pointer by Watkins stopped the run. A pair of free throws by
Jibreel Nasir gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 21-10. The Hawks cut the deficit to 27-19, but the Golden Eagles scored the next seven points as part of a 18-4 run to close the half. A three-point play by Hoffman started the run that also included a pair of free throws by Jones, a basket by Watkins, a basket by Jones, a basket by Wetherell, a basket by Watkins, a basket by Nasir and a 3-pointer by Wetherell.
Cal State L.A. led comfortably the rest of the way. Nasir had four points and four rebounds off the bench for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to California Collegiate Athletic Association action on Sunday, Dec. 18 at Cal State Monterey Bay.
