Golden Eagles See Season End Via Penalty Kicks To Chico

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team saw its season come to an unsatisfying end Friday in the NCAA Division II West Region championship game.

The Golden Eagles and Chico State battled to a scoreless tie through regulation and two overtime periods before the Wildcats finally prevailed in an extended penalty kick session, 4-3, at Jesse Owens Stadium. It took eight kicks before the match was finally decided with Chico State's Alyx Williams burying her chance to send the Wildcats on to the national quarterfinals for the first time in program history.

Cal State L.A. (13-4-4) was making its second appearance in the NCAA Division II West Region title game. The Golden Eagles also bowed out in this round in 2007 with a 2-0 loss at Seattle Pacific. The Golden Eagles were coming off a 2-1 win over Seattle Pacific last Saturday.

Chico State (12-6-5) is now 2-for-2 in matches decided by penalty kicks in the 2011 postseason. The Wildcats, seeded fifth in the region, got by No. 4 seed Cal State Stanislaus on penalty kicks in the first round.

Cal State L.A. had a 16-11 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 edge in the first half. The Golden Eagles had a pair of golden opportunities in the opening period, but could not score. The Golden Eagles also had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks, but never could solve Chico State's strong defense.

This was the third meeting this season between the two California Collegiate Athletic Association programs. Cal State L.A. beat the Wildcats, 1-0, in Los Angeles on Sept. 18, while the Wildcats prevailed in a first-round conference tournament match, 1-0. The fact that Friday's match turned into a defensive battle between two of the CCAA's best outfits was not surprising.

Cal State L.A.'s Jessie Walworth made three saves in goal; while Chico State's Brianna Furner also made three saves. Both goalkeepers were outstanding in the penalty kick session. Furner made four saves on Cal State L.A.'s eight penalty kicks, while Walworth made three stops.

The Golden Eagles had the first good scoring chance, but Andrea Lammers sent a bid just over the crossbar from point-blank range in the third minute of play. Lisa Ohberg had a header off a corner kick by Justine Telles go just wide in the 31st minute and Furner made a brilliant save on a shot by Ohberg after she ran down a pass from Janet Mendez and had a try from close range.

Furner also came up big on a shot by Ohberg in the second half when she was able to make a fingertip grab of a shot, bobble it and control it in the 57th minute. Furner also made a nice save on a shot by Ayana Younge that sailed toward the near post in the 80th minute. Norie Pablo had a final chance in the 89th minute after a nice give-and-go in the box, but her shot was wide.

Telles, Ohberg and Mendez made penalty kick shots for the Golden Eagles, while Carly Singer, Denni Jo Berger, Molly Downtain and Williams were successful for the Wildcats. Ohberg gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead with a make in the third round and Mendez put the Golden Eagles ahead, 3-2, in the sixth round, only to see Downtain tie it up.

Williams then gave the Wildcats the win with her goal in the eighth round.

Chico State will now play the winner of the South Central match between Abilene Christian and Dallas Baptist on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Jesse Owens Stadium.
