ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team had its best offensive showing in California Collegiete Athletic Association play Sunday and it came against a recent nemesis.
The Golden Eagles erupted for five goals and went on to beat Humboldt State, 5-1, in a conference game Sunday at College Creek Field. Cal State L.A. (7-1-4, 5-1-4 CCAA) beat the Lumberjacks for the first time since 2008. Humboldt State had posted shutout wins over Cal State L.A. in 2009 (3-0 in Arcata) and 2010 (1-0 in Los Angeles).

Andy Lopez, Timo Schwar and
Rosario Bras scored goals for the Golden Eagles, who also scored on a Humboldt State own goal in the first half. The Golden Eagles had a big 24-6 advantage in shots. Cal State L.A. had a 3-1 lead by halftime and scored the only two goals of the second half.
Cal State L.A. stretched its unbeaten streak to four games and completed a successful weekend on the road. The Golden Eagles had to settle for a 1-1 tie on Friday at Sonoma State after a highly controversial penalty kick for the Seawolves in the final two minutes of regulation. Cal State L.A. pulled into a second-place tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills in the CCAA South Division, three points behind first-place Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles left nothing to chance on Friday. Cal State L.A. got its first goal just six minutes into the game when a ball went off a defender's head and into the Humboldt State goal. The Lumberjacks (2-9, 2-8 CCAA) got even just two minutes later. Braxton Griffen headed in a cross from Eric Baumgarnder and it was 1-1 just 7:20 into the game.
Swope, though, scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season when he converted a penalty kick in the 18th minute to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Lopez made it 3-1 in the 22nd minute when he headed in a loose ball in the box for his first goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. kept the pressure on in the second half and added a pair of goals to put the game out of reach. Schwar scored his fourth goal of the season on a nice give-and-go with Bras in the 70th minute. Bras ended the scoring in the 89th minute when he notched his sixth goal of the season.
Jordan Payne assisted on the goal with a nice pass in close.
Waleed Cassis made two saves for the Golden Eagles, while Kyle Verde made seven saves for the Lumberjacks.
Cal State L.A. had a 12-3 edge in shots in each half.
The Golden Eagles will return to action next Friday with a road game at UC San Diego.
