SANTA ROSA – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team used its highest-scoring half of the season to post a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over the North Division co-leader.
The Golden Eagles struck for three goals in the first 29 minutes and beat Sonoma State, 3-0, Friday at Trione Fields in Santa Rosa. The game was played in Santa Rosa instead of Seawolf Soccer Stadium because of heavy midweek rain.
Cal State L.A. (7-2-2, 5-2-2 CCAA), ranked 24
th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games. The Golden Eagles are 5-0-2 during that span and have allowed only two goals.
Sonoma State (5-5-1, 5-3-1 CCAA) started the day tied for the CCAA North Division lead. The Seawolves had a 14-12 shots advantage, but only two shots were on goal.
Norie Pablo,
Janet Mendez and
Lisa Ohberg scored goals for the Golden Eagles, who matched a season-high for goals in a game. Cal State L.A. also scored three goals in a 3-0 non-conference win over Grand Canyon. The three first-half goals were the most in a half this season. The Golden Eagles had two goals in the first half of a 2-0 win over Cal State San Bernardino.
Even with the big halftime lead, the Golden Eagles had to be wary of the Seawolves, who were coming off a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Cal State Stanislaus. In that contest, the Seawolves were down 2-0 and scored three second-half goals.
Jessie Walworth made two saves for the Golden Eagles, who posted their seventh shutout of the season. Walworth made both saves in the first half. Alexis Sciacqua made four saves for the Seawolves.
Pablo opened the scoring in the 16
th minute with her third goal of the season. Norie was first go a blocked ball off the foot of
Ayana Younge and she sent her shot to the right corner of the goal. Pablo is now second on the team in goals. The assist was Younge's second of the season.
Mendez made it 2-0 in the 26
th minute with her second goal of the year. A corner kick by
Justine Telles was headed first by
Natalie Martin and then headed into the goal by Mendez. Telles picked up her first assist of the season, while Martin earned her second.
Ohberg scored just three minutes later to make it 3-0. She notched her team-leading fifth goal of the season. She received a pass from Mendez and sent a hard shot off Sciacqua and into the net.
Cal State L.A.'s defense took it from there. The Golden Eagles have allowed only four goals in 11 games this season.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday at Humboldt State.
