SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team battled sweltering temperatures and a nationally-ranked opponent and picked up an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles got a second-half goal from
Liz Franco and beat No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino, 1-0, Sunday at Premier Field. Cal State L.A. (5-2, 4-2 CCAA) salvaged a weekend split against CCAA South Division opponents. The Golden Eagles climbed back into a second-place tie in the CCAA South Division, one point behind Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Franco picked up her sixth goal of the season and it came at an opportune time for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. was locked in a scoreless tie at halftime before the reigning CCAA and NCAA Division II West Region Player of the Year picked up a goal for the third straight game. She now shares the team lead with
Ann Marie Tangorra.
After both teams finished a scoreless first half with seven shots each, the Golden Eagles began controlling the run of play and enjoyed a 10-3 advantage in shots in the second half.
Tiffany Mallick made 11 saves for the Coyotes, seven of them in the second half.
Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Gabriella Batmani made four saves to post her second shutout with the Golden Eagles. She made three of her four saves in the first half.
The only goal came when Franco accepted a pass from Rodwell in the deep left corner and fired a sharp-angle shot that found the net for the game-winning goal.
Cal State L.A.'s defensive effort was outstanding in the second half. The Golden Eagles held the Coyotes without a shot for the first 30 minutes of the second half.
Franco had a match-high six shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Gabbi Segall had four shots and Tangorra had three shots. They accounted for 13 of the team's 17 shots in the contest.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a match at Cal State Stanislaus.
