No. 1 Golden Eagles Suffer Second Straight Shutout Loss

Box Score

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team came up empty for a second straight game against a California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division opponent.

The Golden Eagles, who entered the week ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation, allowed two second-half goals and fell to Cal State San Bernardino, 2-0, Sunday at sweltering Coyote Field. Cal State L.A. (5-2, 4-2 CCAA) dropped its second consecutive decision by a 2-0 count.

Cal State San Bernardino (6-2, 4-2 CCAA) completed a successful weekend, posting consecutive shutout wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-0 on Friday) and Cal State L.A. on Sunday.

The game on Sunday was quite a contrast to the last time the two teams met. In last fall's NCAA Division II playoff game. In that meeting, Cal State L.A. prevailed over Cal State San Bernardino, 5-3, in Los Angeles.

On Sunday, the teams combined for only five shots in a scoreless first half. The Golden Eagles held a slim 3-2 advantage.

The Coyotes finally broke through in the 50th minute off a free kick. Obi Agwu took the kick and Julio Ayala was able to knock in a rebound to break the scoreless tie.

The score remained at 1-0 until the Coyotes added an insurance goal in the 76th minute. Harry Cruz dribbled up the middle and unleashed a blast from about 45 yards out that found the goal.

Cal State L.A. had an 11-6 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 edge in the second half. Marvin Sandoval had three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Joe Davis attempted two. Agwu had a match-high four for Cal State San Bernardino.

James Irwin made three saves for the Golden Eagles, while Tanner Olinger made five saves for the Coyotes while posting his second straight shutout.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road match at Cal State Stanislaus.
