POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team started off a tough weekend of California Collegiate Athletic Association play off to a disappointing start.
The Golden Eagles got a goal from
Liz Franco, but Cal Poly Pomona tied the game in the 73rd minute and won it on a goal just 2:18 into overtime to stun Cal State L.A., 2-1, Friday at Kellogg Field. Cal State L.A. (4-2, 3-2 CCAA) tumbled from a three-way tie for first all the way to fourth in the CCAA South Division with the loss.
Cal Poly Pomona (5-1-1, 3-1-1 CCAA) climbed into a share of first place in the conference with Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State San Bernardino. The Toros and Coyotes played to a 2-2 tie on Friday.
The Golden Eagles started strongly and had an 11-4 advantage in shots during a scoreless first half.
Ann Marie Tangorra had a shot cleared by the defense after it eluded the goalkeeper in the 32nd minute and Franco had a shot hit the post in the 37th minute.
Cal State L.A. also started the second half well and took a 1-0 lead when Franco scored her fifth goal of the season.
Stacey Rodwell got the assist with a pass to Franco, who punched a shot into the corner of the net. It was Franco's fourth goal in the last two games.
The Golden Eagles, though, were unable to hold a second-half lead for the second time in three games. Cal Poly Pomona began to step up its pressure and got the equalizer on a goal by Callie Wilson off a corner kick in the 73rd minute. Lauren Skachenko collected the ball and passed to Wilson, who tapped it in for the goal.
Cal State L.A. got a late corner kick by Rodwell in the final minute of regulation, but a shot by
Gabbi Segall went wide.
The Golden Eagles were whistled for a foul early in the overtime period and Strawn promptly hit a shot that found the right corner of the goal for the game-winner.
Cal State L.A. ended the game with a 17-13 edge in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Gabriella Batmani made seven saves in goal for the Golden Eagles. Franco had a match-high five shots, including three on goal. Segall had four shots and Tangorra had three.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
