SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s volleyball team found the going a bit rough in its first road match of the season.
The Golden Eagles were unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit in sets and fell to Cal State Monterey Bay, 25-21, 25-18, 27-29, 25-21 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at the Otter Sports Center. Cal State L.A. (6-3, 3-2 CCAA) had played its first eight matches of the season at home.
Natalia Gonzalez and
Marquis Mora had 12 kills each for the Golden Eagles, while
Zuzana Cizova had 10 kills. Rheann Fall, the reigning national Player of the Week, had a match-high 20 kills to lead the Otters (8-1, 5-1 CCAA). Cal State Monterey Bay is alone in second place in the conference.
Cal State L.A. had a 52-43 advantage in kills, but Cal State Monterey Bay had a big edge in blocks (11-2) and a big advantage in serving. The Golden Eagles committed 14 service errors and had only six aces, while Cal State Monterey Bay had 12 aces and eight errors.
The Golden Eagles were held to a .159 hitting percentage, while Cal State Monterey Bay hit at a .203 clip.
Stefanie Gay had a match-high 22 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Amrita Tuladhar had 46 set assists and 10 digs.
Sade Greene had eight kills.
The Golden Eagles hurt themselves right off the bat in the opening set, committing seven of their 14 service errors in that frame. The Golden Eagles held a 16-15 lead after a kill by Gonzalez, but the Otters scored the next six points to take the lead for good. Cal State L.A.'s final three serves of the set were all errors.
Cal State L.A. jumped out to an 11-7 lead in the second set after a pair of aces by Cizova and kills by Tuladhor and Mora. The Otters, though, outscored the Golden Eagles, 16-4, to open up a 23-15 lead. A pair of kills by Cizova and another by Mora brought the Golden Eagles a little closer, but the Otters maintained their edge.
Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 19-12 advantage in the third set, only to see the Otters nearly close the match out in straight sets. Cal State L.A. fought off a match point at 27-26 and rallied to take the set after kills by Gonzalez, Cizova and
Kassie Faulkner.
The Otters, though, didn't let the Golden Eagles maintain their momentum into the fourth set and led nearly from start to finish. Cal State L.A. rallied and pulled to within 22-21 after a kill by Mora, but the Otters scored the final three points to close out the match.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at San Francisco State.
