POMONA -- Cal State LA dropped a three-set decision to Simon Fraser on Thursday at Kellogg Arena, falling by scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-14.
Simon Fraser established control early, recording 12 kills and hitting .333 in the opening set. Cal State LA produced nine kills in the frame, but the Red Leafs pulled away for a 25-15 victory.
The Golden Eagles again finished with nine kills in the second set. Simon Fraser responded with its most efficient offensive performance of the match, hitting .385 with 13 kills to earn a 25-17 win and take a two-set lead.
Cal State LA battled through a more competitive third set that featured four ties and the match's only lead change. Simon Fraser ultimately closed out the contest with 15 kills and a 25-14 victory.
Samarah DaCoud led the Golden Eagles with a match-high 15 kills, accounting for 60 percent of Cal State LA's offensive production. She also contributed six digs and one solo block.
Julina Frabotta added four kills and two block assists, while Mia Webster recorded two kills and hit .143. Ruby Ennis finished with two kills, 11 assists and five digs.
Juliana Speiski anchored the Golden Eagle defense with a team-high 10 digs and added four assists. Seriah Demski also distributed four assists, while Teegan Charapata recorded Cal State LA's lone service ace.
DaCoud and Havannah Vogel each registered a solo block. Isabella Barrios and Naomi Jackson added one block assist apiece.
Simon Fraser finished with advantages in kills (40-25), hitting percentage (.333-.010), digs (38-32), service aces (4-1) and total blocks (12-4).
The loss moved Cal State LA to 1-4 on the season, while Simon Fraser improved to 3-1. The Golden Eagles will continue play in the Bronco Classic on Friday at 2:30 p.m. against Central Washington.
